Chapter 4: Creating Classroom Cultures That Support and Promote Student Thinnking

  1. I loved this chapter because it reminded me of the goal I wrote for our NCA plan under the reading comprehension piece. It was all about thinking a-loud while you read. I especially liked when they said that thinking is invisible and that when we think out loud we make it visible to our students therefore allowing them a model to learn from. I am going to make a chart of all the sample phrases they used and post it near my whole group area, so that when I am stuck with how to respond our just need another way of saying something to encourage them it will be right there. I know we are always in a rush to get everything done, but taking the time to really listen to the kids and value their comments (which can be time consuming in itself)will help them feel valued and to learn not to give up when the answer doesn't come quickly. Isn't this our goal anyway?
